Begum Rokeya. ————— Begum Rokeya is one of the greatest women in the world. She was a famous writer, feminist and social worker in undivided Bengal during the early 20th century. She fought for the rights of women throughout her life. She believed that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men have in the society. Rokeya was born on 9th December in the village Pairabandh of Rangpur district in 1880 in a renowned Muslim family. Her husband Khan Bahadur Sakhawat Hussain was very co-operative and always encouraged her to go on with her activities. She was from an upper class family but she did not learn Arabic and Persian. She had great love for her mother tongue. She learnt Bangla and English from her eldest brother Ibrahim. She wrote many books on the existing gender discrimination. She was an inspiring figure. She is still remembered with great respect and honour for her contribution to the development.
