Common Mistakes : “How to ….” verses “How do I …. ?”
I will use the example of boiling an egg to show how when to use “How to …” and when to use “How do I … ?”
1) “How to …”
Use ” How to …” to write instructions. For example here are the instructions for boiling an egg.
How to boil an Egg.
- Bring a pan of water to boil.
- Put an egg in the boiling water for 3 minutes.
2) “How do I .. ?”
Use “How do I …” to ask for instructions. For example John asks David how to boil an egg.
John : “How do I boil an egg?”
Sam : “Bring a pan of water to boil and put an egg in the boiling water for 3 minutes.”
So if you want instructions remember to use “How do I …”
