New Zealand is still extremely active under the surface, and there are many ways you can experience this for yourself. Rent a car at erento and drive to Rotorua, a small town built on a geothermal hot-spot. Here you can see first hand, the famous, and slightly unnerving boiling mud pits by walking across a foot way through the smell of sulphur.
Next, drive on to Tongariro national park, which contains 3 active volcanoes. There are all kinds of conditions here, from rocky, desolate landscape to deep lush forests and green fields. The Tongariro national crossing is one of the more popular hikes in New Zealand and takes you through the volcanic region, although it can be treacherous in bad weather so be prepared.
The North Island is dotted with hot springs, so ask at your hostel or hotel if there are any nearby, as these are excellent to bathe in at night, under the stars. It’s like taking a hot bath in a stream, and quite unusual for those who haven’t experienced it before.

There are many opportunities, especially in the South Island, to hike through spectacular mountain trails, some of which take only a few hours, while others can take up to a week. You should find the time to do at least one, to appreciate the beauty that New Zealand is so famous for.
