Yorkshire is home to some of the finest open gardens in the country, and with spring in full

The ‘Cockpit’ garden at Richmond Castle in Richmond offers beautiful views across the Yorkshire Dales and over the River Swale. During the summer and throughout the autumn, the colourful borders of the garden burst into bloom, creating an inviting spectacle. There is a

manicured lawn backed by a magnificent ring of yews, making an ideal picnic spot. The garden has been in bloom for more than 900 years and the beds and blooms hint at the

garden and castle’s history, including the poignant topiary display highlighting the story of conscientious objectors in the First World War.

Peasholm Park, Scarborough

This beautiful garden has an oriental theme and is certainly worth a visit if you are staying in one of the nearby Scarborough hotels. During the summer months, visitors can rent rowing

boats and canoes to enjoy the beauty of the garden from the water. On foot, you can cross

the wooden bridges across the babbling streams, walk under the oriental waterfalls and try to catch a glimpse of the many different types of wildlife that live in the gardens.

Helmsley Walled Garden

This ancient five-acre garden has recently undergone more than 15 years of careful restoration. The central focus of the garden, known as the ‘Double Hot Border’, is bursting

with colour throughout June to September. There are also many other smaller gardens,

including a pretty cottage garden, peony and rose borders and special fruit and vegetable growing areas – the produce of which you can sample in the garden’s Vinehouse Café.
